Well its finally the final round, training camp is nearly ten days away so we’ll being wrapping up all the draft talk pretty soon. There are 9 picks between 5 teams as the Miami Dolphins didn’t pick in the final round. So without to much more ado let’s finish up this draft.
#1(#218). The Oakland Raiders received this pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the trade for the #126th overall pick. With the 1st pick in the seventh round and the 218th pick overall the Oakland Raiders picked Tennessee State senior T Anthony Morris. As a seventh round pick unless he has a stellar training camp and pre-season expect Morris to be headed for the practice squad this year. Grade: C+
#2(#219). The Cleveland Browns received this pick from the New England Patriots who previously received it from the Tennessee Titans in the trade for the 96th overall pick.
#4(#221). With the 4th pick in the seventh round and the 221st pick overall the Oakland Raiders selected Florida senior WR Andre Debose. Debose had 30 receptions for 540 yards an 18.0 YPC average and 4 touchdowns. Debose had 1 catch for -3 yards this season, unless this kid is a special teams specialist, I don’t see this kid even making the practice squad seems like they wasted a pick here. Grade: F
#6(#223).With the 6th pick in the seventh round and the 223rd pick overall the New York Jets selected Northwestern State senior NT Deon Simon. Simon in 2014 had 26 tackles, 5.5 of them for a loss for a TFL average of 21.1% and 1 sack. The Jets are deep on the defensive line so the only reason I can think of for this move is a defensive minded head coach making a defensive pick with that said it looks like a better pick than the Raiders made two picks earlier. Grade: C
#7(#224)St. Louis received this pick from Chicago who got from the New York Jets in the Brandon Marshall trade.
#8(#225). With the 8th pick in the seventh round and the 225th pick overall the Atlanta Falcons Eastern Washington senior OT Jake Rodgers. The Falcons had a lot of problems with injuries along the offensive line and this pick is probably insurance against another such occurrence. Grade: B-
#12(#229). Jacksonville received this pick previously from the New York Jets who received it from Houston and Cleveland.
#14(#231). Tampa Bay received this pick from Detroit who received from Baltimore in the Haloti Ngata trade who held it previously from Miami.
#23(#240). With the 23rd pick in the seventh round and the 240th pick overall the Detroit Lions selected South Carolina senior T Corey Robinson. With injuries happening to the offensive line seeming to happen all the time some extra insurance along the offensive line is helpful. Grade: B
#25(#242). The Oakland Raiders received this pick from the Carolina Panthers in the trade for the 102nd overall pick. With the 25th pick in the seventh round and the 242nd pick overall the Oakland Raiders selected Virginia Tech senior T Laurence Gibson. With Oakland’s inability to protect Derek Carr last year this might not be such a bad pick. Grade: B
#30(#247). New England received this pick from the Green Bay Packers in the trade for the 147th overall pick. With the 30th pick in the seventh round and the 247th pick overall the New England Patriots selected Marshall senior CB Darryl Roberts. Roberts had 186 tackles 122 of them solo that is a 65.6% STA, 10.5 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 5 interceptions, 32 passes defensed, 1 quarterback hurry, 1 forced fumble and 2 blocked kicks. This kid looks like a good cover corner with eye towards special teams and with Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner gone who knows maybe this kid can be another rookie hero for the Patriots. Grade: B+
#32(#249). The Atlanta Falcons received this pick from the New England Patriots who held it previously from the St. Louis Rams. With the 32nd pick in the seventh round and the 249th pick overall the Atlanta Falcons selected San Jose State senior S Akeem King. With little reliable information about his stats King seems like a low risk pick on team that needed lots of secondary help last season, there are little to no expectations for this kid as a seventh round draft pick. Grade: C+
#36(#253). The New England Patriots held this compensatory pick. With the 36th pick in the seventh round and the 253rd pick overall the New England Patriots selected Alabama senior LB Xzavier Dickson. Dickson had 90 tackles 51 of the solo for a 56.6% STA, 21 tackles for loss for a 23.3% TFLA, 14 sacks, 3 passes defensed, 16 quarterback hurries and 1 forced fumble. This kid looks like he could be a steal even though most of his statistics came in his sophomore and senior years, he looks like he could be a good pass rusher off the edge. Grade: A
I could drag this out longer and try to grade each team’s draft as a whole unit. I’m not going to do that training camp is here and the pre-season is around the corner the NFL off-season is done and so is the talk about this year’s draft class.
