Arkansas
I know its been about two months since the draft and teams are well into minicamp, nonetheless I’ll still be talking about the draft but cheer up there are only two more rounds to go. This round produced a small draft class for us to look at with only 4 players being drafted between our 6 teams, so here we go.
#2(#178).The New England Patriots received this pick previously from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers most likely as part of the Jonathan Casillas trade. With the 2nd pick in the sixth round and the 178th pick overall the New England Patriots selected Mississippi State senior LB Matthew Wells. Wells had 165 tackles 84 of them were solo, 22 tackles for a loss for a TFL average of 13.3%, 6 sacks, 13 passes defensed, 13 quarterback hurries, 3 forced fumbles and 1 interception. Wells appears to be a decent pass rusher and solid in coverage, the need for good cover linebackers can’t be underestimated, while this is most likely a defensive minded coach just picking defense again it’s a good pick. Grade: A-
#3(#179). With the 3rd pick in the sixth round and the 179th pick overall the Oakland Raiders selected Virginia sophomore LB Max Valles. Valles had 78 tackles, 32 of them solo, 18 tackles for a loss for a TFL average of 23%, 12 sacks, 12 passes defensed, 5 hurries, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. The same reason Wells was a good pick for New England, I think Valles is a good pick for the Oakland Raiders albeit with a slightly higher risk factor as Valles played two years less than Wells with that said the Raiders desperately need a linebacker like Valles even if he’ll be low on the depth chart for a season or two. Grade: A-
#5(#181).The Washington Redskins got this pick from Seattle who received it from the New York Jets in the Percy Harvin trade.
#9(#185). The Minnesota Vikings received this pick from the Atlanta Falcons as part of the trade for 137th overall pick.
#15(#191). The Philadelphia Eagles received this pick from the Miami Dolphins as part of the trade for the 47th overall pick.
#24(#200). With the 24th pick in the sixth round and the 200th pick overall the Detroit Lions selected Texas senior CB Quandre Diggs. Diggs had 225 tackles 152 of them were solo for a solo tackle average of 67.5%, 14 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 36 passes defensed 4 hurries, 4 forced fumbles and 11 interceptions. I think this is a good pick as the Lions are still a bit thin at the corner position and he could have an impact in the nickel and dime packages or at worst this kid turns into a viable starter in a couple of seasons as he learns buried on the depth chart. Grade: A
#26(#202). The New England Patriots received this pick from the Cleveland Browns in the trade for the 96th overall selection. With the 26th pick in the sixth round and the 202nd pick overall the New England Patriots selected Arkansas sophomore TE A.J. Derby. Derby is a converted quarterback he played quarterback for Arkansas in 2013 this kid at best gets a practice squad spot this season. Grade: B-
#32(#208). The Tennessee Titans received this pick from the New England Patriots.
