The good news is in the one game I picked this week I was right and I even beat the spread this week bringing me to a resounding 13-6 record this season as well as a smashing 3-6 when picking against the spread. Now for the bad news the Lions did it again, they choked with all the marbles on the line. True these marbles would have only earned them a visit to Seattle but apparently asking the Lions to win their first playoff game since they last won in the 1991 divisional game against ironically you guessed it the Dallas Cowboys was just too much for this team to handle. Forget that with a 1st round boy and their first division title since 1993 when they still played in the NFC Central on the line, they choked in Green Bay where they haven’t won since December 15th 1991 when Barry Sanders was in the 3rd year of his hall of fame career and the Lions were led at quarterback by the very talented Rodney Peete and Erik Kramer.
The Lions had a 20-7 midway through the third quarter when from midfield Tony Romo hits Dez Bryant for 43 yards to the Detroit 7, I feared the Lions were going to blow this and after the Witten penalty when Romo hit Cole Beasley for 15 yards to the Detroit 2, and then the failure to stop DeMarco Murray on 4th & 1 from the 1 yard line, that is when I knew for sure the Lions were going to lose. Yes the Referees made a bad call by picking up the flag on what should have been a drive saving pass interference call on the Cowboys, it was a bad call, yes momentum was swinging in Detroit’s favor and this all but killed it, but it wasn’t the only thing that killed it. Jim Caldwell could have elected to go for it on 4th and 1 from the Dallas 46, he elected to punt and then the Cowboys chewed up the clock and scored the go ahead touchdown. With 2:32 left in the game the Lions had a shot but in true Lions fashion the pressure got to them and they panicked and choked. It’s just that simple they choked.
I have heard conspiracy theorists say that the NFL wanted Dallas in Green Bay in the divisional round so with time running out and the cowboys down 3 they handed them a couple of defensive holding calls and a non call on a blatant hold on the scoring play. Personally while I think the Lions got a couple of very bad breaks at the end of the game, they should have been up 28-7 when the Cowboys started their push, they weren’t they were only up 20-7 and those 8 points they left on the field was the difference in this game.
