Let’s be realistic the New York Mets should be in last place in the NL East they are that bad. Surprisingly they have a solid two game lead on last place Philadelphia. In nearly every single offensive category the Phillies are doing better than the Mets. The Mets have 2211 AB they have 517 hits, the Phillies have 2156 AB and 521 hits that is 55 less AB and 4 more hits than the Mets and the Phillies have played 2 less games than the Mets so far this year. As a team the Mets are 29th in the league with a .234 team BA, the Phillies are 24th in the league with a .242 team BA. The Mets have 107 2B, 6 3B, and 47 HR, compared to the Phillies 102 2B, 12 3B, and 52 HR. The Mets just don’t hit for power. The Mets have taken 241 walks and have struckout 551 times, compared to the Phillies with 191 walks and 516 strikeouts. The two categories where the Mets are better than the Phillies for all their offensive woes is in runs scored with 258 runs to the Phillies 241 and in on base percentage; the Mets have a .313 OBP compared to the Phillies .307. The real reason the Mets have a 2 game lead on the Phillies is not because of their offense but rather because of their pitching and here the Mets are better than the Phillies in almost every category. The Mets pitching staff has given up 550 hits, 241 earned runs, 60 home runs, 232 walks, 523 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.68. The Phillies in contrast have allowed 552 hits, 260 earned runs, 62 home runs, 223 walks, 484 strikeouts, and an ERA of 4.17. While pitching wins games a team still needs to be able to score runs and the Mets despite all their offensive woes and lack of power have still scored more runs than the Phillies who definitely hit for more power. Think on this of the Mets 258 runs the Mets have 244 RBI, the Phillies of their 241 runs only have 229 RBI. That plus a better pitching staff is why the Mets who should be in last place are not. Yes indeed the Mets are the last place team who could.
